On January 13, 2026, Officer Philip Chiorino, a 31-year-old school resource officer with the Jacksonville Police Department, was shot and killed during a security incident at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, near Tarawa Terrace Elementary School. Security officers at the base engaged and fatally shot Chiorino. Jacksonville Police Chief Jarad Phelps confirmed that an officer was killed but did not immediately provide details on the circumstances leading to the shooting. Chiorino, a former Marine firearms instructor who joined the Jacksonville force in August 2024, was living near the base.
