On 02/16/2026, Beech Grove police officers responded shortly after 6:00 p.m. to a domestic disturbance on the 100 block of Diplomat Court related to an escalating dispute involving Kenneth Terrell Johnson and a woman over a vehicle. Officers approached the residence to make contact when gunfire erupted and both responding officers were struck. Brian Elliott, 33, a Beech Grove Police officer and 19-year veteran, sustained critical gunshot injuries during the response and was transported to a hospital where he later died. The second officer survived with injuries. Police launched a Blue Alert and a multi-agency manhunt after the shooting, and Indiana State Police SWAT later located and arrested Johnson alive the same night.
