Summary: On 02/08/2026, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers responded near Wellston after Pence’s wife called 911 reporting he was threatening to kill himself and had a gun to his head. Reporting said a nine year old grandchild was inside the home. Sheriff Kevin Garrett said the interaction moved to the backyard and dispatch heard Pence repeatedly say police would not arrive in time and he would end his life. Police said Pence did not comply with commands to drop the gun. Police said they used less lethal measures including beanbag rounds, then said Pence turned and pointed the gun toward police, and the deputy and troopers opened fire, killing him. KOCO reported Pence was a retired Oklahoma County lieutenant. Oklahoma Highway Patrol led the investigation and KOCO reported Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation personnel also responded.
