OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/18/2026, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Diego suffered a sudden medical emergency while participating in a competitive selection process for the agency’s Criminal Interdiction Unit at the Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy in Havana, Florida. Fellow troopers and Gadsden County Emergency Medical Services personnel immediately provided aid after Diego became unresponsive during the assessment exercise. He was transported by helicopter to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he died despite lifesaving efforts and with family at his side. The specific nature of the medical emergency has not been released by FHP. Diego began his FHP career in 2021 as part of the 149th Recruit Class and served in the Fort Pierce District and later the Fort Myers District. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed his death marked the 55th trooper to die in the line of duty. Other troopers at the academy assisted in initial lifesaving efforts and coordinated with EMS and Survival Flight crews throughout the response.
