On 11/27/2025, Specialist Sarah Diane Beckstrom of the West Virginia Army National Guard died after being shot while assigned to duty in Washington, D.C. On 11/26/2025, she and another Guardsman were positioned near the Farragut Square Metro Station when a man approached and opened fire. Both service members were struck. Beckstrom was transported to a hospital and died from her injuries the following day. Federal prosecutors charged a 29-year-old man in D.C. Superior Court with first-degree murder while armed and related firearms offenses in connection with the shooting.
