On 05/23/2023, Deputy Andres Julian “Andy” Lahera of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office was directing traffic near State Road 44 and North Williamsburg Boulevard in DeLand following a high school graduation event when a driver struck him. He suffered severe injuries and remained hospitalized for more than two years. On 09/11/2025, he died from complications related to those injuries at age 52.
