On 10/16/2025 at about 11:52 a.m., Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton responded to a disabled semi on State Route 11 in Canfield, Mahoning County. He was seated in his patrol cruiser with lights on when a Mack Granite truck rear-ended his cruiser, pushing it into the disabled semi. The collision also struck the driver standing outside the semi. Cayton was pronounced dead at the scene; the semi driver was airlifted to a hospital.

On October 4, 2025, Officer Ray Barrantes of the Chowchilla Police Department was driving east on Highway 152 when his patrol car collided with a double-loaded semi-truck traveling south on Road 13. On 08/26/2025, around 12:30 a.m., Kansas City Kansas police officers pursued a man. During the pursuit, Officer Hunter Simoncic deployed stop sticks on State Avenue and stood in the median. The driver deliberately swerved toward him and struck him with the vehicle. Simoncic was taken to a hospital and died of his injuries. The driver crashed shortly after and was arrested. He faces charges including first-degree murder. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation.

On 08/22/2025, at approximately 12:45 p.m., deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department responded to a residence in the Valle Vista area of unincorporated Hemet, California. They found U.S. Border Patrol agent Isaiah Anthony Hodgson, 29, deceased inside the home. No foul play was suspected, and the cause of death remains undetermined pending investigation.

Hodgson was facing multiple criminal charges at the time of his death. On 07/07/2025, while off duty and reportedly intoxicated, he entered the women’s restroom at a Long Beach restaurant while carrying a firearm. When security attempted to intervene, he resisted. Responding Long Beach police officers attempted to arrest him, and Hodgson physically resisted, injuring one of the officers. The Los Angeles County District Attorney charged him with three felony counts of resisting an executive officer, one felony count of battery with injury on a peace officer, and three misdemeanor counts related to unlawfully carrying firearms in public. He pled not guilty and was released on conditions including relinquishing firearms and attending alcohol counseling. If convicted, he faced up to seven years in prison.

Hodgson’s name had also surfaced in connection with controversial Border Patrol arrests in Southern California, including an immigration sweep in Pico Rivera and other incidents that drew criticism from local communities. His actions had become the focus of public scrutiny and protest.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by his family to cover funeral expenses had raised more than $8,000 by the end of August.

On 08/17/2025, around late evening, Sgt. Lee Sorensen, 56, of the Tremonton–Garland Police Department responded to multiple 911 hang-up calls at a residence near North Park Elementary School. While speaking with a resident outside the home, a male suspect emerged and opened fire. Sgt. Sorensen was struck and killed at the scene. The suspect continued firing at arriving officers. Neighbors persuaded the suspect to surrender, and he was taken into custody.

On 08/17/2025, late evening, Officer Eric Estrada, 31, of the Tremonton–Garland Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence near North Park Elementary School after multiple 911 hang-up calls. As he arrived, the same suspect who had already killed another officer opened fire, fatally striking Estrada. A Box Elder County sheriff’s deputy was also wounded, and a police service dog was injured. Neighbors convinced the suspect to drop his weapon, and he was arrested.

On 08/17/2025, just before 11:00 p.m., Enid Police responded to a domestic disturbance and traced the suspect’s vehicle to INTEGRIS Health Enid Hospital. The suspect opened fire on officers outside the emergency entrance and then moved inside the hospital, firing multiple rounds. Hospital security officer J.W. Bode, 72, a retired probation and parole officer with five years of hospital service, confronted the man and was shot and killed. Enid Police entered the hospital, engaged the gunman, and fatally shot him. No other staff, patients, or officers were injured. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

On 08/15/2025, Maui Police Department officers responded to reports of an illegal shooting near Baldwin Avenue in Pāʻia. A male individual armed with what police believe was a rifle opened fire, striking an officer in the chest. The officer was fatally injured. Police returned fire, hitting the man in the lower hip, and took suspect’s identity, motive, and condition have not yet been released. Chief John Pelletier confirmed the death and said the investigation remains ongoing.

On 08/15/2025, Correctional Officer James Alexander Jackson of the Florida Department of Corrections, assigned to Hardee Correctional Institution, died from heat stroke sustained during a training event. He was 31 years old and a resident of Winter Haven, Florida, when he passed at Lakeland Regional Hospital following the incident.

On 08/13/2025, Frederick W. Scheidt Jr., a 67-year-old retired Sergeant with the New York State Police, died from cancer linked to his assignment supporting rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Scheidt served 30 years with the New York State Police before retiring on 10/14/2009. His illness was formally recognized as a line-of-duty, job-related death resulting from toxic exposure during 9/11 response operations.

Trooper First Class Dennis D. Ricks, 30, of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, was struck by a box truck on August 10, 2025, while returning to his cruiser with emergency lights activated after a traffic stop on Interstate 26 near Orangeburg. He died from his injuries on August 13, 2025. The driver of the truck was found to have a suspended license and was charged, with further charges pending. Ricks was the first South Carolina trooper to die in the line of duty since 2017.
