Allegations: A 29-year-old off-duty female CPD officer says she was waiting for a rideshare when a man and a woman approached, demanded she delete “videos” she had taken in the bar, and then beat her in the face. She needed stitches for a split lip. The police report identifies the man as Officer Carlos Baker who shot Rivera. COPA is investigating. According to the victim’s statement in the police report, no — he didn’t know she was a Chicago police officer.

On June 3, 2025, Sergeant Manuel Edwards, 55, of the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, was fatally struck by a U-Haul truck while riding his bicycle on Gaston Road in Katy, Texas. The incident occurred around 8:12 a.m. Edwards was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Sergeant Edwards began his law enforcement career in 2006 as a detention officer with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.He joined the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office in 2008 and transferred to Precinct 2 in May 2021. In 2023, he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the Toll Road Division. Known for his joyful personality and dedication to his family, Edwards was remembered by colleagues as the epitome of a family man.

Around 9:05 p.m., officers from the Paynesville Police Department, Cold Spring Police Department, and the Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic assault at Alstead's residence on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered Alstead's wife, who had visible, non-life-threatening injuries to her head and neck. She informed the officers that Alstead had assaulted her and was armed with a handgun in the basement.As officers attempted to arrest Alstead, he appeared at the bottom of the basement stairs holding a handgun. Stearns County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Orvis, a 23-year law enforcement veteran, discharged his firearm twice. Alstead then fired a single, self-inflicted gunshot. Despite officers' efforts to provide medical aid, Alstead was pronounced dead in his home. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that while Alstead sustained multiple gunshot injuries, his death resulted from the self-inflicted wound. A handgun and shell casings were recovered at the scene, and all involved officers were equipped with body cameras during the incident.

Larry Alstead had been a retired MSP state trooper with a long career in law enforcement, serving 32 years with the Minnesota State Patrol before retiring in 1999.

On 05/16/2025, Scott Alan Farmer, a 58-year-old former law enforcement officer, was involved in a fatal incident in Oregon City. Farmer, who served with the Canby Police Department from 2002 to 2022 and previously with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office from 2000 to 2002, called a police emergency line stating his intent to harm himself. Officers responded to his residence on Clairmont Way around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, Farmer exited the home armed with a loaded firearm. Despite commands to disarm, he fired five shots at an Oregon City police officer, who returned fire with three shots, striking Farmer in the hip. As Farmer lay on the ground, he apologized for shooting at the officer before turning the gun on himself, resulting in his death. The officer involved was uninjured and has been placed on critical incident leave.

On April 25, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Officer Sam Lively of the Tyler Police Department was traveling southbound on Troup Highway on his motorcycle. As he approached the intersection with East Southeast Loop 323, another vehicle traveling in the inside lane changed lanes into the outside lane, striking Officer Lively's motorcycle. The collision caused Officer Lively to be ejected from his motorcycle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Officer Lively had recently graduated from the police academy and had been sworn into the department for five months. An autopsy was ordered, and a memorial escort was held for the officer as he was transferred to a Lindale funeral home. ​

On April 22, 2025, around 12:30 p.m., Dawson County Sheriff's Deputy Jessie Perez, 42, was conducting a traffic stop on West U.S. Highway 180 near North Avenue V in Lamesa, Texas. During the stop, a passing commercial vehicle threw debris that struck Perez. The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

On April 15, 2025, Lieutenant Helio Garcia of the South Fulton Police Department was killed in a head-on collision while on duty. Garcia was driving his patrol vehicle eastbound on Flat Shoals Road near Connell Road when his vehicle was hit head on by a car. Garcia was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and died.

On April 13, 2025, the Walton County Sheriff's Office announced the death of Deputy Jake Monk, who succumbed to injuries sustained in an off-duty traffic accident. Deputy Monk was a U.S. military veteran and the father of two children. The Sheriff's Office described him as a dedicated deputy and soldier who served his country with honor. On 04/10/2025, 34-year-old Officer Malissa Torres of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 18th District, was found fatally shot in a first-floor restroom at the station on 1160 N. Larrabee St. in Chicago’s Near North Side around 2:30 a.m. The wound was ruled an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Her colleagues described her as warm, caring, deeply proud of her young son, and a valued member of the CAPS unit.

On April 9, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Melissa Pollard of the Wood County Sheriff's Office was involved in a vehicle collision at the intersection of FM 14 and State Highway 37-S, between Quitman and Winnsboro. Deputy Pollard's patrol vehicle collided with the back of a semi-truck. She was transported to UT Health Quitman, where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured. Deputy Pollard had served with the Wood County Sheriff's Office for over eight years and had previously served with the Fannin County Sheriff's Office and the Collin County Sheriff's Office.

On April 9, 2025, Correctional Officer David Hilburger, 53, was found deceased in his state housing unit at Groveland Correctional Facility after failing to report for duty. A wellness check was conducted, and he was discovered in his room. The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association called Hilburger’s passing “tragic” and stated they would continue to monitor the ongoing investigation.​

On April 8, 2025, a U.S. probation officer assigned to the federal courthouse in Des Moines, Iowa, died by suicide while on duty. The officer sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the courthouse building at 111 Seventh Avenue. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Des Moines Police Department is investigating the incident.

On April 4, 2025, Suffolk County Police officers conducted a welfare check at the Brentwood residence of Bruce Boyd, a retired New York City Department of Correction officer. Upon arrival, Boyd's wife allowed officers into the home, where they found Boyd holding a knife and suffering from self-inflicted wounds. Boyd allegedly moved toward the officers with the knife. At least one officer fired, striking him. Boyd was transported to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputy Will May responded to a disturbance call at the Dollar General on Highway 90 in Mossy Head. He made contact with a man inside the store. As they exited together, the man drew a firearm and shot Deputy May multiple times. May returned fire and killed the man. He was transported to North Okaloosa Medical Center and pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m. He had served as a deputy with Walton County Sheriff's Office since 2015.

On March 26, 2025, at approximately 7:50 a.m., Officer Osmar Rodarte, a two-year veteran of the Marysville Police Department and U.S. Army veteran, was fatally shot during a multi-agency operation executing search warrants targeting transnational drug trafficking organizations. While serving a warrant at a residence on Kestrel Court in Olivehurst, an exchange of gunfire occurred between law enforcement and an individual inside the home. Officer Rodarte was struck and later succumbed to his injuries at Adventist Health and Rideout hospital. The suspect was also shot and pronounced dead at the scene. This incident marks the first line-of-duty death for the Marysville Police Department in over a century.
