OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/09/2025, Sergeant Kenneth Bryon Salas of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office was assisting a motorist in removing a large hay bale from Interstate 90 near the Four Lakes exit east of Spokane when a motorcyclist failed to observe the emergency lights, striking Salas and his patrol car. He was transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and later died from the injuries sustained in the collision. Salas had served 34 years in law enforcement, including more than two decades with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and in the U.S. Air Force and Washington Air National Guard, and was nearing retirement at age 59.
