On 07/11/2025, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Eric Cespedes entered the water at South Padre Island after his children were caught in a rip current. He was able to help ensure their safety but was overcome by the current and drowned. Cespedes was 37 years old and had served 17 years with the U.S. Border Patrol in the Rio Grande Valley Sector.
