On 01/12/2025, retired NYPD Detective James J. Motto Sr. died from cancer linked to his assignment with the NYPD’s search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Motto had joined the department in November 1979 and served in the Drug Enforcement Task Force, retiring in 2003. His death is included in NYPD memorial records of officers whose illnesses were attributed to 9/11 work.
