On September 21, 2024, Lawrence David Orso, a 46-year-old San Diego Police Department officer, was arrested in Murrieta by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of DUI with a reported blood alcohol level of 0.23%. He was booked at the Cois Byrd Detention Center and released on bail at approximately 8:26 a.m. He was later found unresponsive in the jail parking lot around 9:53 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported no signs of foul play. In 2025, Orso’s family filed a federal lawsuit against Riverside County, alleging wrongful death and negligence in his detention and release process, and seeking accountability for his preventable death.
