On 12/31/2024, Major Jeffrey A. Burke of the New Jersey State Police died from cancer attributed to his assignment working security and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Burke served with the NJSP for over 26 years and was commanding officer of the Intelligence & Criminal Enterprise Section at the time of his death. His passing has been publicly mourned by the department and state officials in recognition of his service and the cause of his illness.
