On 12/14/2024, retired Nassau County Police Department Detective Philip J. Schifini died from cancer attributed to toxic exposure during his assignment to rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 attacks. Schifini responded to Ground Zero as part of his law enforcement duties and later developed illness recognized as 9/11 related. His death has been formally memorialized in connection with his World Trade Center service.
