Kevin G. Canavan, 64, Chief of Patrol with the Nassau County Police Department and a 39-year department veteran, died on June 30, 2024. Canavan had served in rescue and recovery operations after the September 11, 2001 attacks and later developed cancer that officials said was related to his exposure during those efforts. The department and local officials confirmed his death was attributed to that illness. No weapon was involved in his death and no police encounter preceded it. He had recently received recognition for continued service despite his illness. Body-worn or dash camera footage is not applicable to this non-incident death.
