Officer Thomas Joseph Nolan who had recently quit his last law enforcement job murdered his wife Ashley Nolan and injured his 2 daughters at home on 08/12/2024. He then died from suicide. Officer Nolan had served on the Indianapolis Metro PD for 20 years before quitting for undisclosed reasons just 3 months before the murder/suicide.

Lake County deputies were called to a disturbance on Brookside Drive. They heard a noise and saw a back door that had been kicked in at a residence. Three deputies were shot. Numerous deputies now responded and shot and killed the man. One deputy died and two were sent to the hospital.

SWAT arrived and engaged in a shootout. Two people inside of the home were shot and killed. One officer was killed. Two officers were sent to the hospital, one with bullets in his extremities, groin and in critical condition and another one with a bullet in his shoulder.

On July 25, 2024, Senior Corporal Segus R. Jolivette of the Lafayette Police Department was fatally shot during a hostage barricade situation in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard in Jeanerette, Louisiana. The incident began when the Jeanerette Marshal's Office attempted to serve a warrant on a man who then barricaded himself and two others inside a residence. During the ensuing standoff, shots were fired, resulting in the death of Corporal Jolivette and injuries to three other officers. Subsequent investigations revealed that Corporal Jolivette's fatal wound was the result of 'friendly fire.' Hurst was arrested and has been charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

On July 25, 2024, Correctional Officer Hunter Scott Miller, a 24-year-old member of the Kentucky Department of Corrections, died after collapsing during a physical training test at the Northpoint Training Center in Burgin, Kentucky. The training was part of the selection process for the facility's Emergency Response Team. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Officer Miller was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Retired Cook County probation officer Cathleen Lee, 65, opened fire on her former daughter-in-law Marissa Galloway, 45, killing her as Galloway was securing an infant stroller in a car. There had been a fight between them over custody of the child. Lee then died by suicide using the same gun. The murder-suicide was witnessed by the child.

This was not an on-duty shooting and Officer Lee was retired from law enforcement. This case as well as all others involving deaths of police officers is not counted in the numerical death toll count on this website. On July 10, 2024, Probationary Police Officer Edgar A. Ordoñez, a 33-year-old recruit with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), collapsed during a training exercise at the Rodman's Neck Training Facility in the Bronx. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. during a period when the National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory, with heat indices reaching up to 99°F. Officer Ordoñez was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. His death was attributed to heatstroke during training.
