On 05/10/2024, retired New York City Police Department Chief Gerald Nelson died after a long battle with cancer attributed to his rescue and recovery work at the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Nelson joined law enforcement in 1973 with the New York City Housing Authority Police and continued his career after the 1995 merger into the NYPD, eventually serving as Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn North before his retirement in February 2015 after 41 years of service. His death from cancer was recognized and his name was added to the NYPD’s Memorial Wall under 9/11 related illness deaths.
