OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 10/02/2023, Officer James M Sides of the Alamogordo Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 900 block of South White Sands Boulevard. During the stop, the driver exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds, striking Officer Sides. Officers returned fire and killed the gunman. Sides was transported to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. He had served with the Alamogordo Police Department for approximately two years and previously served with the Las Cruces Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two children.
