On 11/06/2023, Officer Lawrence Christopher Prather of the Cairo Police Department responded to a disturbance call in the 200 block of 8th Street in Cairo. During the response, a man inside the residence fired multiple rounds, striking Officer Prather. Officers returned fire and killed the gunman. Prather was transported to a regional medical facility where he died from his injuries. He had served with the Cairo Police Department for several years and previously worked in patrol assignments. On 11/02/2023, Senior Police Officer Phoukham Tran, age 65, died at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa from long-term complications of injuries he suffered on 08/19/2011 when a drunk driver struck him while he was directing traffic at the Iowa State Fair. Tran was medically retired after a 30-year career with the Des Moines Police Department that began when he was recruited into the department’s cadet program and later promoted to Senior Police Officer. He was originally from Laos, served the community for decades, and was honored at memorial services and ceremonies recognizing his sacrifice.

Correctional Officer Kelly Rolando was killed in a vehicle crash at 7:14 p.m. on the 54 Bypass in Mexico, Missouri.

Officer Rolando was returning to the Northeast Correctional Center in Bowling Green from a temporary assignment at the University Hospital in Columbia when he collided head-on with a vehicle traveling southbound.

He and the driver of the other vehicle were killed instantly.

On 09/29/2023, Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Eric Salrin, age 23, died when his patrol vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Bluff Road and Windy Drive in Richland County, South Carolina while responding to a call for service. Salrin had joined the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in March 2022 and graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in January 2023.
