OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 10/15/2023, Officer Trevor Abney of the New Orleans Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle near Interstate 10 and Morrison Road. The driver refused to stop and drove away. During the pursuit, the driver exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds, striking Officer Abney. Officers returned fire and killed the gunman. Abney was transported to University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. He had served with the New Orleans Police Department since 2021 and was assigned to the Seventh District. He is survived by his family as reflected in official memorial records.
