On 12/16/2022, former Suffolk County Police Department Chief of Patrol Thomas Patrick Compitello died from cancer attributed to his participation in search and recovery operations at the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Compitello was a longtime law enforcement officer who began his career with the Amityville Police Department and later became one of the first members of the Suffolk County Police Department, serving for 48 years before retiring. His death was officially recognized as job related and connected to 9/11 exposure.
