Steven Hernandez, a suicidal NYPD cop in mental health crisis jumped from the roof of a Queens building on 01/10/2023 and was found just before 12:30 p.m. For undisclosed reasons, NYPD had previously put him on desk duty and confiscated his service weapons.Officer Hernandezhad previously posted many social media posts in November that raised alarms with a number of his friends such as the entry on 11/10/2022 asking “Please help me. Please love me. Please care for me. Please listen to me. PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH ME. PLEASE SPEND TIME ON ME!” By all signs, he had been in various states of acute mental health crisis for months that would have required a higher and more urgent level of care than psychiatric office visits such as the one he had just returned from at the time of his death.

On 12/25/2022, shortly after midnight San Marcos police responded to a disturbance call at an apartment complex on Barnes Drive. Dispatch was told Kyle Lobo, 36, had been drinking and was armed with a handgun, and had assaulted someone. Officers encountered Lobo outside holding a child, which he handed off to a woman before drawing his firearm toward officers. Two officers fired, striking Lobo; he was transported to Ascension Seton Hays where he died from gunshot wounds. A Hays County Grand Jury later determined the officers’ actions were justified and did not return an indictment. Lobo had resigned from the San Marcos Police Department in October 2022 amid family violence charges.
