On 11/04/2022, Mount Vernon Police Officer Ivan Mauricio Lopez was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Highway 43 in Mount Vernon, Alabama. Authorities reported that during the stop, a man inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Lopez. Responding officers located him with critical injuries. He was transported for medical treatment and later died from his injuries. Lopez had served with the Mount Vernon Police Department and was 27 years old at the time of his death.
