A former Virginia State Police (VSP) trooper responsible for a triple homicide across the country in California died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Edwards had committed a triple murder on Friday, Nov. 25, 2022 when he killed three members of the Winek family in Riverside County and set fire to their home to cover it up, after catfishing an online relationship with a 15-year-old girl in the family. San Bernardino deputies observed a red Kia Soul driving on Highway 247 during a manhunt for him. Sheriff’s Aviation and California Highway Patrol’s Aviation followed the Kia Soul from a distance until SWAT could catch up.
SWAT intercepted Edwards’ car, he fled and led deputies on a chase, during which time he shot at and struck a SWAT vehicle multiple times. Edwards reportedly lost control of his car and the chase ended when he drove off the road.
the 15-year-old girl whom he had “catfished” was in the car with him, but was able to exit at that point and be rescued by sheriff’s deputies.
As Edwards exited the vehicle, authorities said he pointed a gun at the sheriff’s helicopter, and deputies fired back at him. He was shot and killed. The girl survived.

On 11/15/2022 at 10:45 p.m. Monday, officer Brandon Paul Tsai was near the intersection of SW 3rd Street and Pioneer Parkway when he saw a vehicle with a fake paper license plate. Tsai escalated a chase and he himself lost control of his squad car, hitting a light pole. The 32-year-old was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

On 11/04/2022, Mount Vernon Police Officer Ivan Mauricio Lopez was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Highway 43 in Mount Vernon, Alabama. Authorities reported that during the stop, a man inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Lopez. Responding officers located him with critical injuries. Illinois State Police were conducting a search warrant in the 600 block of N. Cherry Street at the home of former officer Aaron Michael Linke. Police allege that when they made forcible entry into the home, they heard a gunshot. Linke had allegedly committed suicide under police duress. Police did not release BWC footage and no eyewitnesses can be found to corroborate the police narrative. Linke was a former probation officer who had been arrested for distribution of cocaine in 2002. It is unknown what the charges at the time of his death were that led to the search warrant.
