On 03/29/2022, Special Deputy Sheriff Douglas Warren Sanford, age 48, of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department died after complications from COVID-19. Indiana Law Enforcement Memorial reporting stated he became infected while assigned to the Animal Control Division, was hospitalized, and remained hospitalized until he died. Local reporting described him as the department’s Humane Law Enforcement Officer and said he had been hospitalized with COVID-19 since early December 2021. He had served with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office since 2015 and worked in animal control and humane law enforcement.
