On 03/28/2026, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy Levi Vargas participated in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, a 120-mile law enforcement race through the Mojave Desert. During the race, he experienced a medical emergency. Medical personnel responded, but he died from his condition. Authorities have not released the exact cause of death. Vargas had served with the department since 2015 and was assigned to the San Dimas station.
