OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/02/2026, Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Kentucky Department of Community Based Services personnel went to a residence on KY-365 near Sturgis to serve emergency guardianship paperwork. During the encounter, police said Ronnie Phillips, 60, exchanged gunfire with deputies. Deputy Rick Coyle was struck and critically injured during the shooting. Phillips was also killed. A female at the residence was removed safely. Coyle was airlifted to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he remained hospitalized for several weeks before dying from his injuries on 04/30/2026.

Coyle served two years with the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office as a school resource officer after retiring from the Chicago Police Department following 28 years of service. He also previously worked for the Will County Sheriff’s Office. Kentucky State Police are investigating the shooting.
