Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor responded to reports of a wrong-way driver traveling south in the northbound lanes of Route 1 near Lynnfield around 2 a.m. Authorities said Trainor had just finished his shift but remained nearby and responded to assist. A Jeep driven by Hernan Marrero collided head on with Trainor’s cruiser near the Saugus and Lynnfield line. Trainor was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Marrero also died in the crash. State police officials said Trainor’s actions likely prevented additional deaths and injuries. He was a 2023 graduate of the Massachusetts State Police Academy and previously worked as an Essex County corrections officer.
