OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/11/2026, Greenwood police attempted to stop a blue Jeep connected to multiple prior shooting related incidents. Police escalated a high speed chase after the driver refused to stop. Officers said the Jeep crossed into oncoming traffic on East Cambridge Avenue and crashed into Officer Don “DJ” Keller’s patrol vehicle while he was responding to assist in the pursuit. Keller was killed in the collision. Police said a 15 year old was driving the Jeep and that passengers ages 17 and 18 were also inside the vehicle. All three were hospitalized. One passenger was later released and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice. Keller’s K-9 partner, Vice, was inside the patrol vehicle and survived without reported injury. Officials said Keller was the first Greenwood police officer killed in the line of duty in approximately 70 years. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
