On 06/25/2026, Deputy Sheriff Damian Draper Bost of the Columbus County Sheriff's Office was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while assisting with a disabled motorist on U.S. Highway 74/76 near the Hallsboro Road exit. Deputy Bost was outside his patrol vehicle placing traffic cones around the disabled vehicle when the tractor-trailer entered the emergency lane and struck him.
