OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 06/17/2026, Trooper Sergio Romero of the Texas Department of Public Safety – Texas Highway Patrol was killed in a patrol vehicle crash while attempting to conduct a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 287 near Childress. At approximately 4:00 p.m., a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of his patrol vehicle, causing a collision. Trooper Romero died at the scene. He had previously served with the Hall County Sheriff's Office before joining the Texas Department of Public Safety as a member of Class B-2025 and was assigned to Childress.
