OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/29/2026, Deputy Sheriff Logan Reece Utt of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed while conducting a welfare check at a residence on Fancy Gap Highway in Cana. Two deputies responded to the home after a family member requested a welfare check. When the deputies made contact with the resident, Michael Puckett, he opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Utt and striking the second deputy in the ballistic vest. The wounded deputy returned fire, but the gunman fled the scene. Puckett was arrested two days later and charged with murder of a law enforcement officer, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, assault with a firearm in the commission of a felony, and multiple weapons offenses.
