On 05/12/2026, Game Warden Pilot Joshua T. Tibbetts of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife – Warden Service was killed when his department-issued Cessna 185F crashed near Schoolhouse Pond in Avon. Warden Tibbetts was flying alone while assisting the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife with a fish stocking mission when the aircraft went down shortly before 11:00 a.m. He was the only person aboard and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash. Warden Tibbetts had served with the Maine Warden Service for 18 years and had previously served nearly 12 years with the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.
