On 04/19/2026, Deputy Sheriff Thomas "Walker" LeMay of the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed while conducting a welfare check at a residence off U.S. Highway 270 near Wister. Deputies responded after receiving a request to check on the welfare of a resident. When deputies arrived, they were met with gunfire. Deputy LeMay was fatally wounded, leading to an hours-long standoff before the gunman was taken into custody.
