On 06/28/2026, Deputy Erika Serrato of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was struck and killed while investigating a suspected driving-under-the-influence crash on Interstate 45 North near the Woodlands Parkway exit. Deputies had responded to a multi-vehicle collision and were directing traffic when a commercial truck pulling a trailer struck Deputy Serrato, who was outside her patrol vehicle. The truck also struck two marked patrol vehicles with their emergency lights activated. Deputy Serrato was transported to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries. Another deputy was injured by debris and later released from the hospital. One of the drivers involved in the original crash was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. The crash remains under investigation.
