On 03/28/2026, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Levi Vargas suffered a medical emergency while participating in the annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, a 120-mile law enforcement relay race through the Mojave Desert. Vargas, who was assigned to the San Dimas Sheriff's Station, received immediate medical treatment but died from the medical emergency. He had joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 2015 as a custody assistant before graduating from Academy Class 413 and becoming a deputy sheriff. Vargas was an 11-year veteran of the department and is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and extended family. The official cause of the medical emergency had not been released at the time of the initial reports.
