OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/05/2026, at approximately 6:20 a.m., Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residence near Southwest 157th Avenue and Southwest 160th Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive man. Deputies found Doral Police Department Officer Erwin Fernandez dead at the residence. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Homicide Bureau assumed responsibility for the death investigation. Investigators stated there were no signs of foul play.
Law enforcement sources told NBC Miami that Fernandez died by suicide. Later that day, the Doral Police Department publicly identified him and confirmed his death in a statement expressing condolences to his family and fellow officers. The department stated that Fernandez had served as a school resource officer assigned to Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School.
Following the investigation, a large law enforcement procession escorted Fernandez from the scene to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office. The procession included numerous police motorcycles, patrol vehicles, and an ambulance traveling along Florida's Turnpike and the Dolphin Expressway. Doral Mayor Christi Fraga issued a public statement honoring Fernandez's service and extending condolences to his family and colleagues.
As of the latest reporting, authorities had not released additional details regarding the circumstances of Fernandez's death. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office continues to handle the investigation in accordance with standard procedures for unattended deaths.
