NARRATIVE:
On 08/19/2026, 23-year-old Carlos Ramirez, a Tucson Police Department recruit and former Pima County Sheriff’s Department corrections officer, was shot and killed during a home invasion at the residence he shared with his fiancée and child in the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive in the Star Valley area southwest of Tucson.

At approximately 6:00 a.m., the Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a shooting at the residence. Deputies arrived and found Ramirez inside the home with a fatal gunshot wound. His 23-year-old fiancée, a current Pima County corrections officer, had also been shot. She was transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening and was reported in stable condition.

Investigators described the incident as a home invasion and began searching for two men who were reportedly dressed in black clothing and ski masks. Authorities said the men may have fled in a gray 2007–2013 Acura MDX, possibly missing its fuel-door cover. As of 08/20/2026, the two men remained at large and authorities had not publicly disclosed a motive for the attack.

Ramirez had previously worked as a corrections officer for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department before joining the Tucson Police Department academy. He was a member of Basic Recruit Class 26-1 and had completed 23 weeks of training at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center. He was scheduled to graduate on 08/27/2026, eight days after he was killed.

Ramirez and his fiancée shared a child. A family member of Ramirez’s fiancée told local media that the wounded woman was pregnant and claimed that the attack was not random; authorities have not publicly confirmed either assertion. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the killing. Arizona Department of Public Safety personnel were also assisting the investigation.

Detectives asked anyone with information concerning the two men or the gray Acura MDX to contact authorities. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department listed the investigation as case number 260819030.
