Police Sergeant Richard Kelly was found unconscious in his office at the Battle Ground Police Department on Aug. 10, 2023, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police had initially reported that the officer suffered from a “medical emergency while on duty.” It wasn’t until 10/26/2023 that police announced the Clark County Medical Examiner found fentanyl and methamphetamine in Kelly’s system. The police department had made a “sizeable bust” of fentanyl earlier that day and the substance in Officer Kelly’s body matched what was secured as evidence. Police made it clear that “more likely than not caused by an intentional act and not an incidental workplace exposure.”
