On August 17, 2023, Special Agent Patrick C. Bauer, a 47-year-old veteran of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Criminal Investigation, was fatally shot during a routine firearms training exercise at the Federal Correctional Institution Phoenix firing range in Phoenix, Arizona. The incident occurred in the morning while Special Agent Bauer and fellow agents were conducting standard training procedures. He was transported to HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead in the early afternoon.The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Preliminary reports indicate that Special Agent Bauer was inadvertently shot by another agent during the training exercise. The findings of the investigation will be submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona for review.
