On 05/11/2023, retired police lieutenant Jesse Porter shot and killed special police officer Maurica Manyan during a training exercise in a conference room of the Anacostia Neighborhood Library. The Grand Jury charged officer Porter with second-degree murder. Witnesses told police that Porter, who had been hired to conduct training on how to use a police baton, suddenly pulled a gun from his holster, pointed it at Manyan and pulled the trigger once, killing her.
