On November 9, 2024, Correctional Officer Christopher Martinez, 27, of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), died in a car crash on Highway 99, south of Pixley, while en route to work. Officer Martinez began his CDCR career in November 2023 as a cadet at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center. After graduating, he was assigned to the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility at California State Prison, Corcoran, in March 2024. He is survived by his wife and 9-month-old child.

Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez, 26, was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Chatham on November 4, 2024. During the stop, Martinez and his partner were speaking with the vehicle's driver when a passenger, Darion McMillian, allegedly reached for a bag on the floor. Despite warnings, McMillian reportedly fired a fully automatic weapon equipped with an illegal machine-gun conversion device, fatally shooting Martinez. Police returned fire, killing another individual in the vehicle, while McMillian fled the scene and was later arrested.

Golden Police Officer Evan Dunn died on November 5, 2024, after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 58. The officer had been responding to a call and was alongside his training officer, Bethany Grusing, who sustained serious injuries. On October 6, 2024, Park Ranger Kevin Melvin Grossheim, a 31-year veteran of the National Park Service, drowned while attempting to rescue a family stranded on Namakan Lake in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota. The family, who had been caught in rough weather with winds over 40 mph and 5-6 ft waves, had called for help. Grossheim successfully reached the family and was towing their boat back to the mainland when his own vessel capsized. While the family swam to safety, Grossheim went missing. His body was recovered after a three-hour search.

On September 29, 2024, Valencia County Sheriff's deputies responded to multiple calls regarding a neighbor dispute involving gunfire on the 100 block of La Ladera Road in Los Lunas, New Mexico. The dispute was between former deputy Michael Gabaldon and his neighbor, Thomas Rodriguez. Deputies had been called to the scene earlier in the day due to reports of Rodriguez firing a gun in his backyard. After attempting to de-escalate the situation and failing to get Rodriguez to exit his home, deputies left the scene. Shortly after, they received another call reporting that shots had been fired. Upon returning, deputies encountered Gabaldon armed with a gun. Despite commands to drop the weapon, Gabaldon did not comply, leading a deputy to fire a shot that struck him in the shoulder. He died at his home. The New Mexico State Police are investigating the incident.
