Per court records, Officer Fitzgerald was responding to reports of a robbery when he first encountered a man who deliberately shot him after a short pursuit and struggle on North 18th Street near Temple University's campus. After the shooting, the man reportedly stood over the officer and shot him several more times in the head while he was on the ground.
