The Jeanerette City Marshal attempted to serve an arrest warrant for Nyjal Hurst, 31, at a mobile home on Martin Luther King Drive around 9 a.m. The Lafayette PD, Jeanerette PD and SWAT arrived along with several neighboring law enforcement agencies. Police arrived. Two people came out of the mobile home and told them that Hurst was inside and that he had locked himself inside with a juvenile and another person. Police allege that they heart shots fired inside and breached the mobile home. During the shootout, Lafayette Officer Segus Jolivette was shot and killed. He had been an SRO turned SWAT negotiator who had gotten shot along with 3 other officers. In the hail of bullets, it has not been clarified so far whether he was shot by Hurst or friendly fire from SWAT.
Nyjal Hurst was arrested and is held without bail. Officer Jolivette leaves behind a wife and 5 children.
