Per official police narrative, around 7:30 p.m. on East Sixth Street, officers responded to a call of a disturbance at the address. Police state that Harrington was “loud” and pointed a gun at two officers and was shot and killed. Per his father, Tavares Harrington was experiencing a mental health episode when police arrived and shot and killed him. “They got away with murder”, the father stated. Harrington was on psychiatric medicines, had missed some and was in an exacerbated mental health state and needed help. He shouted to police to please not shoot him, was shot and fell besides his father. It had been his father’s birthday. Harrington had been arrested in the past and was well known to the PD in this town with a population of under 5,000.
After the shooting, the PD received training by the CIT Crisis Intervention Team, a 40-hour training on basic de-escalation of mental health crisis intervention tactics.
