William "Billy" Atkins had a mental health disorder, appeared to be in a delusional state but was very upbeat according to his mother. Fort Knox PD responded to a call of a suspicious person near the post's visitor center. It is unknown how they approached him but Atkins fled from police onto the Fort Knox military base while being chased by 3 patrol cars. A standoff ensued and Atkins allegedly tried to escape the situation, “attempted to ram” police cars and was shot dead. No video or third party verification of this official police story is possible and no footage can be found.
