On 02/06/2026, Federal Way Police Department officers responded around 8:45 a.m. to reports of a vehicle blocking the roadway with a man unconscious behind the wheel. Officers determined the vehicle was stolen and approached to make contact. The man exited and continued running as police attempted to detain him. During the encounter he tried to take a passing driver’s vehicle while holding a firearm, and an officer opened fire, striking him. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center where he died from his injuries. The involved officer was placed on administrative leave and the Valley Independent Investigation Team assumed control of the investigation.

On 02/06/2026, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a hit and run collision at Esplanade Avenue and San Jacinto Avenue, identified the driver involved, and searched nearby streets after he left the crash. Deputies located him in the 2000 block of San Jacinto Avenue and moved to detain him, and during the contact he displayed a firearm and deputies opened fire and killed him. On 02/05/2026, around 10:30 p.m., Surprise Police Department officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance near Reems Road and Acoma Drive. Officers located Rudy Gaitan, 28, and police chased him on foot toward Reems Road. Police entered the roadway during the pursuit. A passing vehicle struck both Gaitan and a Surprise police officer. Paramedics transported both to a hospital, where Gaitan died from blunt force injuries. Police said the driver remained at the location and cooperated. Police did not report that Gaitan had a firearm. Authorities have not released body camera footage. On 02/05/2026 at approximately 5:00 p.m., deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic enforcement stop on a motorcyclist near Frontage Road and Nuevo Road in Perris for an alleged traffic violation. Deputies signaled for the rider to pull over, and the motorcyclist fled at a high rate of speed, prompting a pursuit eastbound. Deputies eventually lost visual contact near Placentia Avenue and North Perris Boulevard. About two blocks east of that location, the motorcycle collided with an uninvolved passenger vehicle at the intersection of Placentia Avenue and Redlands Avenue, striking the driver’s side of the car. Emergency personnel responded and transported the rider to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he succumbed to crash-related injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not reported injured. California Highway Patrol personnel handled the post-collision investigation.
