Deputies and other responding agencies, including Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Texas Rangers, attempted multiple efforts to de-escalate a standoff that lasted more than seven hours. According to the sheriff, Norton intermittently fired a handgun toward vehicles on the roadway and then toward deputies. After extended negotiation attempts, Norton exited the residence with a handgun, did not comply with law enforcement instructions, and raised the weapon toward deputies. Deputies discharged their service weapons, striking Norton. Emergency aid was initiated immediately, but attempts to revive him failed and he died from his gunshot injuries. Deputies involved were placed on administrative leave as the Texas Rangers lead the independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Weapon status was reported by law enforcement as a handgun held and fired by Norton during the incident.

On 01/31/2026, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a reported homicide in the 400 block of Walker Avenue in Camarillo, where a man was found dead from gunshot wounds. Deputies located a vehicle believed to be involved and attempted an enforcement stop. The driver failed to yield and led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit southbound on U.S. 101 Freeway, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.
