On 05/17/2026, Fort Smith police responded to reports of a shooting in the 7200 block of Massard Road. Police said Joshua Keller shot Officer Kyle Newman, causing life threatening injuries. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, multiple deputies opened fire during the encounter, striking Heggie. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. On 05/18/2026, High Point police responded to the 4500 block of Jamesford Drive after neighbors reported that children ran from a home saying their father was stabbing their mother. Officers forced entry into the residence after observing signs of a violent assault. Police said they encountered Carlos A. Osegueda, 48, inside the home covered in blood and holding a knife. According to investigators, officers repeatedly ordered Osegueda to stop, but police said he continued advancing toward them while holding the knife. Officers opened fire, killing him at the scene. Inside the residence, officers found Jessica M. Osegueda, 45, suffering from severe sharp force injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Two children inside the home were not physically injured. Four officers were placed on administrative leave while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation reviewed the shooting.

On 05/16/2026, officers with the Parkersburg Police Department responded to an apartment at 3408 25th Street in Parkersburg, West Virginia, for an “unknown problem” call shortly before 10 p.m. Police said officers encountered Miguel Angel Gallegos, 49, inside the apartment and that he opened fire on responding officers.
Deputies from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist, including deployment of an armored vehicle. Police said Gallegos and officers exchanged gunfire during a prolonged standoff before officers opened fire and killed him.
After entering the apartment, officers found Evelyn Lassend, 45, dead inside the residence. West Virginia State Police later identified Gallegos as the person accused of both firing at officers and causing Lassend’s death. Authorities said Lassend’s cause of death remains under investigation.
A Parkersburg police officer and a Wood County sheriff’s deputy were placed on administrative duty pending internal review. West Virginia State Police are conducting the investigation.
