On 05/09/2026, DeLand police attempted to stop Brandon Joseph Brabin after officers said he nearly struck a pedestrian in downtown DeLand while driving without headlights and running red lights. Police said Brabin continued driving west on State Road 44 and evaded responding officers for several hours. Around 4:30 a.m., deputies located Brabin’s Nissan Altima in the parking lot of the Walmart Neighborhood Market on South Woodland Boulevard. Deputies approached the vehicle and police said Brabin accelerated and attempted to drive away again. A Volusia deputy fired through the windshield, striking Brabin. The vehicle continued across the parking lot before crashing. Brabin was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. On 05/08/2026, a Becker County deputy attempted to stop Michael James Azure while he was driving an ATV near the intersection of Minnesota Highway 34 and County Highway 21 in White Earth. Deputies said Azure’s driving privileges had been revoked and police escalated a chase after he continued driving southbound onto Mission Road. The deputy later lost sight of the ATV after it entered a gravel trail and ended the pursuit. About 15 minutes later, deputies located the ATV abandoned in a field south of White Earth and found Azure unresponsive in a nearby wooded area. Deputies and emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but Azure was pronounced dead. Authorities transported his body to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. On 05/08/2026, Hays police responded after reports that a man stole a handgun from a local gun shop in Hays. Police said the man, who reportedly had blood on his hands, left the area before officers arrived. Officers later located the vehicle at a residence in the 200 block of West 24th Street and established a perimeter around the home. Police activated the Special Situation Response Team and brought in an armored vehicle from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Authorities said statements made by the man led officers to believe he was experiencing a mental health crisis and could pose a danger to himself. Police chased the vehicle for approximately two minutes through Amesbury before the SUV crashed at the intersection of Elm Street and Route 110. Beiker Alexander Guerrero Perez, who was riding in the back seat, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was struck by another vehicle. He died from his injuries. Police arrested driver Yenciel Soto, 18, along with passengers Felix Agramonte, 24, and Iran Soto-Custodio, 29, on multiple drug trafficking and pursuit-related charges.
