On 01/02/2026, Jerry Lynn Steele Jr, 41, was shot and killed by Bakersfield police officers during a welfare check at a residence in the 3700 block of El Alisal Street in south Bakersfield, California. Officers were dispatched to address a reported peace disturbance involving a man allegedly threatening family members with a handgun. Upon arrival, officers encountered Steele, who was reportedly armed and non-compliant. An officer-involved shooting occurred, and Steele was struck by gunfire. Despite medical aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Body-worn camera footage was recorded and is expected to be released as the investigation continues. Officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
